Epilogue

when the pain ends and the worlds of green and blue fade away,
he opens his eyes, no longer blinded, to the light of another day.
it feels like home. but insubstantial, a shadow of reality
just meant to ease him on. he sits up on the couch.
he regards the peace, the unlit fireplace, the infinity pool beyond the glass walls
sparkling blue in the afternoon sun shining down on the hollywood hills.

he hears a snuffle. an excited yelp. and then the patter of little feet.
he looks up.
the puppy scrambles through the door and up to the couch
and hops into his lap, tail wagging furiously,
licking his face all over in loving reunion.

Daisy curls up trustingly in his lap with a contentment that knows no words
and gives Neo's hand a friendly lick
when he tentatively reaches out to pet her.

this man is not her master, but he's close enough.
close enough.
and she still has so much love to give.
