One Day to Live

"Sam. I don't understand."

"I don't either, GERTY. I don't either."

and they watch the Earth set.

Back in the base, everything is cool and dark; as though it is about to rain, only there are no skies here to overcast themselves and shed water onto the dry moon dust. The walls are cold, smooth and clinical. And yet home. Sam leans his forehead against one and listens to the silence of the ages.

"Sam. Is everything all right?"

"Yeah. Yeah, it's... it's all right, GERTY. I just need to be alone for a while, okay?"

"Okay, Sam. I am here if you need me."

"I know. You're a great friend, GERTY."

"I am your only friend."

Wry smile. "Yeah. I guess so."
