Hey, Anakin, I was checking out the reborn WI(N)M site (which looks lovely, kudos for all your hard work) and saw you'd noted, "it's pronounced kay-ah-neu, not kee-ah-noo."

Can you elaborate on the "neu" sound? Like, what does it sound like? If not "noo," like "news," then what?

I'm not sure, but according to Keanu it's 'nyu'.

Although everyone seems to prounounce it as 'noo' any way...

Oooh, is that from a magazine interview or a live one? I remember seeing a live interview where he said his name a few times (maybe it's the one where he said that his name was cool, "...but I'll keep you warm" or something like that?) but I wasn't getting "nyu" from that one, more like a "Keh-ah-noo."

My real name's a bit unusual so I'm sensitive to doing my best to pronounce other folks' names as they like, knowhutahmsayin'?

Magazine interviews:

WHAT'S THE CORRECT PRONUNCIATION OF "KEANU"?
Well, it's actually Kee-an-yu, but most people read it as Kee-an-oo.

www.whoaisnotme.net/articles/1992_09xx_say.htm

^ though this one is dodgy, because they got the first two syllables wrong.

Full Name: Keanu Charles Reeves
Pronounced: Kee-ahn-yu, not Kee-a-noo!

www.whoaisnotme.net/articles/1994_07xx_thi.htm

K Keanu - obviously. The correct pronunciation of the name is 'Kee-an-yu'. It is a Hawaiian name which translates as 'Cool Breeze'.
www.whoaisnotme.net/articles/1994_12xx_kea2.htm

His name (pronounced Kay-AH-new) is Hawaiian...
www.whoaisnotme.net/articles/1988_09xx_kea.htm

The name Keanu, pronounced Kay-ah-nu, is Hawaiian and means ''cool breeze over the mountains.''
www.whoaisnotme.net/articles/1995_0718_kea.htm

...go figure.

(Although a note: in British pronunciation, 'new' is pronounced 'nyu'. There have been both British and American sources who claim that the last syllable is 'new'. So I'm guessing that it started with a British source, got picked up by an American one that repeated the 'new', which other American sources then edited to 'noo'...)

I found a soundbite a while back where he pronounces it himself (didn't save it, stupidly). It sounded like -nuu to me.

^Yeah, I think the now defunct KeanuWeb used to have all sorts of neat files like that, 'cause I think I've heard that file myself...maybe Keanu A-Z had it too? *sigh* Anybody know what happened to all the juicy stuff KeanuWeb had?

On sale for US$10,000. :\

Meanwhile I've got a handful of K-Web articles courtesy of LucaM and keanugirl76, still in the process of getting them up.

Yeah, I saw two of those on Youtube; mostly the last syllable goes by way too fast to tell.

Although this site that EverythingIsMagic linked -> http://www.hawaiianshop.com/Hawaiian_Names.html#y

Says that 'u' is pronounced 'oo'.

A-haaa! Found the soundbite again. Although it does go by very fast; I listened to it a couple of times and am still not 100% sure. http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/7436/

Gah... if the Hawaiian pronunciation is 'noo', then it's 'noo'. If Keanu says 'nyu', it just means he's wrong.

I really am a dork--I checked out the link (thanks so much for hunting it down, BTW!) but couldn't find a soundwave of him saying his name (?).

Kee-a-NOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE SAID IT!

IT WAS HIM that confirmed his name's pronunciation in an interview for an Italian network yesterday, by spelling each syllable slowly and clearly.

Who could be more reliable than him?

Then, besides talking about TDTESS, he said that he hopes the first thing Obama will do is to share equally wealth among people and that he feels more similar to Neo than Klaatu.

Native Hawaiian speakers.

Native Hawaiian speakers
Well, as you said in a previous post in this thread, it seems that their pronunciation of 'U' is 'OO' (BTW, same in Italian and other languages).

If yesterday even he confirmed it, so 'OO' for 'U' is the correct one

I meant the first syllable; I thought he said it was kay, not kee...

At least that's what he said in a different interview where he pronounced his name.

I don't really know what happened Sephonae (except that you're not the dork here, I think!) , maybe I've pasted the wrong link? This should be the correct one: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Makeup/1032/waves.htm

It's really a conundrum isn't it? Makes his quote "My name can't be THAT hard to pronounce." quite appropriate.

You're right, Fiercelyred, I'm not a dork, I'm just retarded. That second link was great, thank you!

Thank you very much for the link, Fiercelyred.

Yes, it does go very fast and, after listening to it 10 times, it SEEMS to me that Keanu says Kee-a-noo, but it's just my impression.

If only the video of the interview I saw was available somewhere... but I havent' found it yet

There, Keanu pronounced his name very slowly
