"Hollywood's Top 10 Atheists", a snippet with very little Ke-content, but funny anywahs in that atheism in Hollywood is obviously an "ugly truth" that worries the religious fundamentalist/traditionalist lot in the USA:

It's actually one of my pet peeves that people feel the need to make this sort of list; it's sort of like, 'Look at all these cool people who are atheists! (or whatever other group) Don't you want to be just like them?' and there's just... something very high school clique about it. It's bad enough when individual famous people push their religious or non-religious views on others, but now there are others doing it for them?

Which kind of sucks, because I think there are lots of people who are really nice about their personal beliefs and don't feel the need to splurge them all over the place, and then someone else comes and does it on their behalf and makes them come across as kind of obnoxious, and makes them the target for backlash. There often is some degree of malice involved too, even if just a mischievous sort, because they know that it will piss some people off and they still do it any way.

Meanwhile, Keanu's never called himself an atheist. :\ Where'd they get that info? All evidence and things he's said so far point towards agnosticism, with him occasionally saying that he believed in God, but not a specific religious one, just a generic sort of higher power. In the past he's also mentioned belief in reincarnation and astrology and other things that most - admittedly not all - atheists don't believe in. So far the only thing I can think of that led to that assumption was when he was listed at celebatheists.com (he's since been shifted to the agnostic section) with the supposed evidence for this being a quote Keanu made on how he was not brought up in any religious traditions. Non-religion =/= atheism. srsly.

Oh, and they also used the exact same quote from the Constantine interview - where Keanu said that the film had made him have less doubts about heaven and hell - only that there they took it to mean that he doubted their existence more, when an in-context reading shows that it was the opposite. I found that kind of funny.

So... yeah. Keanu's always consistently not used his stardom as some soapbox for his own religious or political views, stating specifically that it was personal, and it would be nice if people could respect that. :(

I prefer for myself a much quieter form of spirituality. And you're right Ke's mentioned reincarnation and astrology, I remember reading that.

There was actually someone I ran across in the library, who actually had the belief that all the rain we've been getting down here is actually God punishing people for their wicked deeds.

I always thought rain was more a blessing than a curse.

I just realized the thread's gone from religion to weather now. All 'cause of me, I'm sorry for that.

Q: Hey Leonard,

Great column regarding baseball films. I've actually added quite a few to my Netflix. After thinking about it, it made me wonder: What are the greatest football movies? I've seen Any Given Sunday and Remember the Titans, two of my favorites, but secretly, I enjoy The Replacements with Keanu Reeves. Are there any other good or even decent Football films out there?

Speaking of Keanu, why does he get such a bad rep? I'll admit that some of his stuff isn't that great, but he still does some pretty good films. Little Buddha, A Scanner Darkly, The Lake House (I constantly defend it, it's a decent movie) and the first two Matrix films were good. Is it just because he's so monotone? David Duchovny is the same, but people appear to enjoy the things he does.

A: A friend of mine took an acting class in college and the professor was the acting tutor for Keanu Reeves on Much Ado About Nothing. He said that she said she used to say that anyone could do Shakespeare, then she met Keanu Reeves. She doesn't say that anymore.

It's not so much the monotone delivery, as how that leads to the idea that he's dull and bland as an actor. I also wouldn't say that he's technically proficient as Laurence Olivier, but he's also a lot better than the tons of actors out there in low budget indy films and regional theater. As recent performances in Constantine and The Day the Earth Stood Still show, Reeves is learning how to make what he can do and what people's perceptions are of him work for him. He's also got a lot of turkeys on his filmography that does him no favors such as Johnny Mnemonic, Chain Reaction, The Watcher, Sweet November and Feeling Minnesota.

Yeah; probably partly due to his race. On the other hand, he's been described as the poster boy of sci-fi and futuristic films.

( as a side note, I couldn't help notice that in the two Shakespeare adaptations of Brannagh that I've seen - Much Ado... and Hamlet- his apparent penchant for military uniforms made him switch the story to a different time, much closer to 'our' time. And somehow it didn't really fit with the language. I liked Zeffirelli's version of Hamlet much better. It felt more... true)

But then, can't say I have preconceived notions on how Shakespeare should be played. I just watch a movie or a play. If it resonates with me, fine. if not... then it doesn't.

It's just that , for me at least, K gives 'vibes' of present and future, not past. Nothing to do with looks, but with something else I can't explain.
