What is with him and the term "half breed"? :)

it's the term used by all the other characters in the movie when referring to his. At least in the early version of the script that was available on the net and which Ani posted on the site.
Blame Chris Morgan ;)

... could be also a literal translation of the Japanese term. anyone here who speaks Japanese and could check that?

@Luca, I was also in mind of his using that term in Constantine. That makes it a recurring theme.

I thought of 'Constantine' the very first time I've read this term in one of his earlier interviews on the Ronin subject. I guess in Ronin the term is meant to be understood in its pejorative sense.
In the same time, in terms of 'being a halfbreed is the curse of Kai's life'(or maybe a blessing in disguise, IF they left certain lines in the final cut) it could sound like a recurring theme. But the character's attitude and personality are different.

@ Luca, thanks for answering in such detail. A recurring theme is what I see here.

I was just reading a keanu article how he enjoyed this Ronin comic book series when he was younger and here he is the lead in 47Ronin.
Just FYI :)

Yet another episode from the new directors vs. big film studios war.
And of course the vultures are already gathering via Facebook.

"Universal wants a big event movie, [but] Carl did everything he could to hijack it, to make it into a drama," says a source close to the project. "Keanu was so along for the ride." Meanwhile, he says, executives on the project "placated Carl and Keanu extensively until it was too late," allowing them to film sequences that will end up on the cutting-room floor. Representatives for Rinsch and Reeves declined comment.

I can imagine Keanu wanting to make it a drama rather than an action movie; an internal rather than external story. I can also imagine Universal being totally opposed to the idea. Ye gads, I hope this movie doesn't end up as a choppy patchwork of action scenes, with a few amputated drama scenes hanging loosely and inexplicably in the air. :-(

... the fate of Johnny Mnemonic comes to mind. or more recently, of the Day remake :(

May I have the bits that will end up on the cutting-room floor? May I? Please? Pretty please? *big, pleading kitten eyes*
... for my own Cinema Paradiso... :(

(of course, since it's been shot in 3D, it's bytes, not bits, and it's not the cutting-room floor but the virtual recycle bin, but let's not get too technical, that's another documentary ;) . and the contents of said recycle bin would do just fine ;) )

LucaM, in that case, you must invite us all over to your place for screenings of said bits and bytes! I'll bring the popcorn. Who's bringing the 3-D glasses?
