Anakin, you're right, he IS a gigantic troll. Keanu is a large, though often thin, man. He's almost like a bear in this. Yes, the annoyance, being infuriating works well. He annoys the hell out of James spader's character. Still, the movie as a whole truly, deeply and resonantly sucks, in not a good way.

I am sort of exhausted! The number of times he, or in general people in the industry, have to answer similar questions. So to everybody who sincerely do that and especially KR

As Chad or Dave said, the beagle puppy Daisy is a boy and not a girl. There is a new picture of John Wick holding the puppy and you see that it is a male.

It sounds silly, but when I saw that puppy in the trailer I knew it was a male, because he just had the same energy like my own beagle boy Benny. I know it will be hard watching the dog being killed.

great interview, thank you - as Keanu has said "it's not just a dog" - a dog is really the ultimate expression of unconditional love - to take that from someone? I can't imagine what I'd feel.

Yeah, I've really been annoyed at people making fun of the premise. This isn't about animal rights. The dog was the last connection he had to his wife. In the mind of a grieving person, losing the dog would make him re-experience at least some measure of what it was like to lose her.

Many years ago when I lost a loved one, I had the hardest time getting rid of all the flowers everyone sent. They were long dead, wilted, and dried out by the time I finally did it, but it still felt wrong. It was yet another loss, when I was still dealing with the first one. If I felt that way about a bunch of silly flowers, how much more so would it be true for John when he loses a living thing that showed him affection, kept him company, and reminded him of the bond he had with his wife? Add to that how he would have felt watching her waste away from a disease while he was powerless to stop it, and you have a very logical premise for someone to say "Eff it, I'm done being helpless" and use his knowledge and resources to bring some judgment.

They talk about him unleashing violence for a puppy, the connection aside (which ofcourse is the vital point here), he is a hitman not a bank accountant. He goes about retrieving justice the only way he knows. When he already sees his wife being taken away as an injustice done to him by powers unknown whom he can't punish, THIS serves as the last straw. Doesn't mean he has lost his humanity, it just means he has gained some.

Bullseye.

When we lose someone we love, we don't want to punish people; we want to punish God. But we can't, so we look for a proxy.

Referring to the post up above: That's really well-said, Jack, and thank you for sharing. I think that everything that reminds you of a loved one that goes away - to say nothing of being violently ripped out of your life - carries a lot of emotional weight. It ISN'T about animal rights as such, but as an animal lover, the idea of murdering a puppy just does send me right over the edge.

Neaura, you're exactly right about the inciting incident. He's taking control in the way he knows how, and exacting revenge upon the kind of person that he has been / must be again in order to balance the scales of justice. Even in the underworld, there are rules that must be followed, and breaking those rules of a species of honor carries an inevitable cost.

Looking at the picture of the dog in your profile, I realize I may have sounded a little callous there. If I did, I'm sorry.

oh heavens, no! not at all! and I totally get that it is not "only" the idea of killing a puppy, but what that puppy represents.

@MmeRenard: this might not be the right thread but since our conversation has veered towards those lovely creations, thought I'd share this. Found it to be very touching.

I may be reading too much into the movie but I don't see it as just some revenge tale, it's the tale of a man whose journey towards humanity is abruptly ended by two forces, one known and one unknown. He seems to veer away from that path but even the altered journey only makes him more human.

Thanks, Neaura. It is touching. It's a very special connection to the world. And I certainly see John Wick experiencing grief in the film, even just from the little bits in the trailers. Anger is absolutely a part of grief, for everyone.

Exactly MmeRenard! Of course it's sort of a parody on assassin movies and has all those typical, sometimes cheesy elements but there is something different about it too. An underlying humaneness of a distinct kind. More interviews i read, the more i am convinced.
