Venville's choice of actors couldn't have been more spot-on. Reeves played Henry's role beautifully, channeling his maturity from his vast portfolio in motion picture to give Henry enough charm to pull of his emotional daftness; Henry can be rather annoying with his passivity and indifference to everything that happens around him.

Farmiga, fun as always, instilled wit into the melancholic Julie that eventually coerced both Henry and her out of their respective despair. Julie needed a catalyst to free her chains-the daunting limitations of her life in Buffalo- and Farmiga managed to help Julie pull it off with grace without coming off as a whiner.

Caan, however, was rather disappointing. It's only natural to expect some Ed Deline (Caan's role in series 'Las Vegas') charisma but you'd be disheartened at his rather unconvincing impression of a conman.

;)

So it looks like Keanu is attending the Munich Film Festival sometime between June 24 and July 2:

Reeves has many arrows in his quiver, but screwball comedy isn't one of them. Vera Farmiga, James Caan and Fisher Stevens can do it, but they often seem to be looking back, waiting for Reeves to pass the baton. What's needed is someone nervous to play Henry. A Steve Buscemi, for example. Reeves maintains a sort of Zen detachment. Whatever happens is all right with him.

...Henry's not supposed to be screwball comedy, dammit !
and with Buscemi, it would have been a completely different movie.

Reeves maintains a sort of Zen detachment

...which is exactly how Henry came across in the script.

[...]he laughs at the idea that people might think the real Reeves is Mr. Whoa. 'Maybe I can be accused of doing my work too well,' he says. 'I guess there was some kind of crossover where [viewers] felt that that was me—and it's not.'

ahem. someone chose an inspired name for this site ;)

I picked up HC dvd today and I am watching it. It's really so much more fun on my own tv screen than it was in the theater. Partly because I can pause and slo mo & rewind to pick up every nuance. I'm only half way through but I needed to get some dinner so I am going right back to it. Of course I am devastated there is no commentary or extra's :( but the story is unfolding gently and sweetly for a bank robbery story. I am going to order the blu-ray used from amazon in a coupla of weeks. This story is almost too quiet and intimate for the big screen.

I got my copy in the mail on Saturday and it was my first time seeing it. Buffalo was the closest place it played in a theater and only for a short time so I never made it there. I thought on first viewing that it moved along too slowly. However after giving this some thought, I concluded that I ruined it for myself by reading the script. I knew what was going to happen so I was rushing my thoughts getting from scene to scene. Can't wait to watch it again and study it more closely.

lindawn You're absolutely right. I did the same thing. Watch it again knowing the slowness enhances the storytelling . It's truly made as a throwback movie of the Capra era. Story, scene and feeling being more important . I did the same thing and raced ahead, Watch again and you'll be surprised.

@inkhuldra, I don't think it had to do with him that there is no commentary. He and Lemore said there would be commentary when they were at WFF last year. I suspect it had to do with who bought the film for distribution.
I also have an idea that Keanu might not be interested in showing outtakes or bloopers. And I totally believe knowing too much about the movie beforehand can change your expectations.
I just finished viewing it and there was a lot I did not remember from the one time I saw it in the theater. Trust me, I will view it A LOT.
HC is not going to make my upper half of fav Keanu flicks but there are scenes in there that are precious to me. I still feel this movie will play well on TV. And I still wish he got to eat more of the 3 breakfasts...

BTW, this movie is growing on me. I been watching it a lot and its still fun. I do tend to jump around. I don't watch it from beginning to end. Still don't like Caan much. Or that guy that played Joe. I find it funny that circumcision came up in a conversation. But Reeves sez nothing...damn.

Just found this review through Topix.

It isn't a good one, I'm afraid, though the guy admits that:

In general, Reeves is an interesting actor who often proves capable of bringing some engagingly unexpected shades to potentially generic roles. However, he's also a passive actor who tends to fare best when he's given something which pushes him a little bit (I love the soft-spoken actor doing his best Bogart in the flawed but compelling Constantine)

One for the archive?

He's right about that. Keanu's acting is at its best when his character is given something to react to.

He's wrong about everything else, though.

However, I remain befuddled by the role of Henry. He is the most passive character imaginable; someone whose actions and interests are shaped entirely by the people around him. He meets some prisoners and decides he wants to become a proper criminal. He meets an actress and decides he has a passion for Chekov. The only original decision he makes is the decision to go to jail, and even that's a decision of inaction.

On the contrary The passive, unassuming Henry is the ultimate catalyst. Offered a preposterous and unlikely 'way out', he quietly grabs the chance and gets the snowball rolling. He doesn't talk much, but he watches and listens a lot; listens not only to people's words, but also to the silences and unspoken thoughts behind them. He gives people around him not what they want, but what they need. Gives his ex-wife the freedom and means to have the family she always wanted. Drags Max and Julie out of their bitterness and complacency. Turns Derek's amateur theater play into an unexpected 'happening'. Henry's the unlikely wild card that changes everyone's life and in the meantime finds his own voice.
But it takes patience to see all that.
