Some people raising concerns about anorexia sufferers using the film as 'inspiration' in all the wrong ways:

gosh - and what's the solution? only doing comedies and action movies?

I think people are much smarter than they are given credit.

The Guardian addresses the same issue and as well fails in providing an alternative how to properly address difficult topics.

what Taluthah said.

also, I notice a trend of judging a movie by its trailer... which is neither fair nor just.

Yes and no; from the ONTD thread there seemed to be quite a few ED sufferers who said watching the trailer was already too much for them because they could sense themselves relapsing into that mindset, seeing all those exceedingly thin, beautiful actresses. From those who've actually seen the film, the responses seem split between those who found it therapeutic/helpful and those who found that it brought them back to that bad mental space.

I don't think there's a solution, though, because films shouldn't shy away from hard topics either, and the fact that this is starting a discussion is already a good outcome. And from what I hear, the people involved with the film are aware of the issues and did their best to present this in a sensitive, non-glamourising way.

But right now I'm more concerned about the interviews where Lily Collins spoke about how her nutritionist helped her lose weight in a 'healthy' way, which as some people have pointed out might make a lot of people desperately try to find out how that was done and do it for themselves. Which is still better than them losing that weight in an unhealthy way, but I think one of the key motivators for healing is knowing that their ED might kill them; such that if they hear that there's a healthy way to do it, that obsession might just come back even stronger. Ultimately, this is still a mental illness that directly affects their ability to think rationally about this, which is what makes them especially prone to being hurt by even the most well-intentioned film; some of them mention having been 'inspired' even by documentaries on the harm of anorexia, because just seeing those emaciated bodies spurred them on to try harder to get there.

I agree that criticizing a film based on a trailer, a movie that someone hasn't actually seen, is stupid and kind of irresponsible. It's what fundamentalist "Christians" do all the time. It is really willful ignorance, isn't it?

And while ED are not an issue for me, thank God, there are some films that I won't see because I strongly suspect they could trigger bad behavior OR that I simply feel that aren't to my taste or that I'd find grossly offensive in some way. That doesn't necessarily mean those films shouldn't be made. There may be films that shouldn't be made or seen, but I don't think "To The Bone" is one of them.

Advocating censorship is never helpful - it's fascistic - and discussion always has the potential to be helpful. It's better than denial, isn't it?

All of that said, I always have trouble with actors becoming grossly unhealthy for a film. Yes, I'm including Keanu's weight loss for Little Buddha in that.
AND from the beginning, I didn't like that "To The Bone" was being promoted as a "comedy."

I think that you can stay slim (thin) as long as you are healthy but anorectic people are rather neither healthy nor happy (which is one of the reasons for doing things like that). That's tough.

Someone mentioned that part of the backlash might also be due to the reaction to Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, which was apparently a terrible example of how not to make TV shows glamourising suicide - apparently it triggered at least two suicides (with another two stopped in time) that were directly 'inspired' by the series, so people are a bit on edge right now when it comes to a movie that looks like it could potentially do the same with ED. Had it been released at another time, it might have drawn a different reaction.

Right now I get the sense that the main issue isn't that the film glamourises anorexia - which so far everyone involved and various viewers have said it doesn't - but rather that its content is likely to trigger relapses in those who are battling anorexia. I can empathize with that, but I don't really know what the solution is here, given that the film itself apparently handled the subject matter as sensitively and thoughtfully as it could. At the very least, it's definitely started a conversation, and perhaps made it easier for people to notice if someone they know might be suffering in secret.

that's a perfect summary:
"And if we as a society can no longer talk about serious issues out of fear they may trigger someone to harm themselves, then we’ve managed to harm everyone."

Problems will never get solved by hiding them. And what's a trigger - I guess that's different for each and every patient and might as well be a women's magazine which can be seen while purchasing the local news. No one is forced to watch a movie or series dealing with a topic this one may consider as hard or uncomfortable.

Yeah... that's true too, and likely more harmful because those models are usually presented as healthy and beautiful and inspirational, vs in this movie where it's made explicitly clear that this is a dangerous illness.
