I didn't know about the order and 'creative differences'.Well, in this case we have no right to complain. They managed to make it after all.:) case

While he is not as compelling as Keanu Reeves in the recent remake (Scott Derrickson, 2008), Michael Rennie as Klaatu is not a problem; his is easily the best performance of his career.

man, I lived to read that :D :D :D

I am going to stretch this topic a bit to include this inspirational vid of the actor that had the heart attack after he was robbed at Penn Station in TDTESS. He hit the floor just as well as Klaatu did in the bathroom :) He tells me he wore knee and elbow pads so it did not hurt that much.

You can really tell Reeves still has a fondness for Ted. Sweet.

BTW did any of you all hear Klaatu say the words Klaatu Barada Nicto when he reaches up and touches the sphere at the end of the movie? Yet?

Nope, not yet. And I have two DVDs, one bought from Amazon.com (edition for the US market) and a Romanian one. but it's on neither. At least not at the end of the movie, but at the beginning. when the sphere lands in Central Park. :\\

I heard it both on my blu-ray copy and when it was shown on TV here in the USA.
This remains a puzzle.

I am so loving the format that they are showing TDTESS on FX. They show bits of the interviews at each break and the commentary by Scarpa. He explains how Keanu was so perfect for the role in his believability & "otherworldlyness". And some comments on his desirable acting techniques that I can't remember but are wonderful. Usually all I do is bemoan the censorship of movies on TV so this is good. :D

from my own notes, taken way back when ;)

Scarpa ( about K as Klaatu)
…[…] he really was the star that anyone could imagine for this role ; you buy him act in this sort of otherworldly way ;

…I think this would be a dangerous idea ( the lead actor contributing to the script writing) with a lot of actors because most of them would try to beef up their part [..] while with Keanu, ironically, what he is trying to do is shape up the movie and make the whole movie better.

the lie detector interview scene was specially written for Keanu – ‘because it suits him and it’s something he does well’ “ironically ( my note : ???) it became one of the major scenes in the movie ‘

methinks there wasn't much love between Scarpa and Keanu. :\\

I do recall the commentary on the movie where he says this movie was a "Keanu Reeves movie" so they had to have Klaatu show up somehow earlier than 40 minutes in. Reeves more hands on approach with script/dialogue might have irked Scarpa as did his major star status. The script had been written for a lesser known actor and certainly one that had no script approval. But overall Scarpa's comments on the FX presentation were positive.
Any chance you've heard Klaatu say Klaatu Barata Nikktu when he was reaching up to the sphere, yet? Part of the FX commentary mentions it. ;)

I might be half blind - apparently my CRT monitor was slowly dying on me for months and discovered it only yesterday- but I ain't deaf ;)

if that metallic, distorted sound that can be heard over the general noise made by the nanobots when Klaatu was reaching up to the sphere is supposed to be the second time he 'whispers' the famous phrase, then so be it.
it's sort of overkill, though. saying it once, at the beginning, would have been more than enough. oh well, it's not the only faux pas of this movie :(

Some (faint) praise for Keanu :

http://www.beckyances.net/2011/09/school-bells-a-clangin/

Speaking of foreigners speaking Chinese the blog Confused Laowai had this video that I just had to share. It’s called The Hollywood Guide to Speaking Chinese and it is a compilation of some of the funniest scenes of actors speaking Chinese in movies. For the most part they are really terrible. For me, I found the blond woman to be the best speaker followed by….Keanu Reeves. Seriously, give the guy some props as I could actually understand what he was saying. It comes off slightly awkward and slow, but I believe he really learned it versus the others who just tried to memorize the sounds.

@Luca, the point of saying Klaatu Barata Niktu is the same in the remake as it was in the original. To stop Gort from his mission. I do not see that as overkill.
And as with everything he does in the movies, Anakin, I am betting he labored over the pronunciation. Expectations are the problem I think. I am sure we all have an accent when speaking another language that we acquired later in life. I often say that I have no accent, when in reality, and when speaking with my locals it comes out pretty strongly. Of course, I am the tragedy of many Americans, I only speak the one language.

the point of saying Klaatu Barata Niktu is the same in the remake as it was in the original. To stop Gort from his mission.

I 'get' that. And that's what happened in the beginning. Alien gets shot, Gort reacts as pre-programmed, alien says famous line, Gort is deactivated. Movie carries on; only all this happens at the beginning, not at the end, as it did in the original. I thought this was the 'inverted context'

For me, the movie works better without inserting the line also at the end. If the destruction process was activated by Klaatu placing his hand on the sphere, the same action could have deactivated it. Saying the line a second time dilutes its power. Magic words are not to be abused of ;) Maybe that's why I had a hard time identifying said noise as 'the' line.
But hey, it's their movie, not mine...

I also thought that Keanu did quite well at the Chinese. And given the invisibility of most languages of the world (i.e. languages other than from former colonizer countries), anyone who actually tries to learn a language or at least tries to pronounce it in an adequate way gains a lot of respect from me. And I can say that after over a year of studying the language, my pronunciation - even as I was still learning Chinese - was never really good. So, expecting someone to pronounce it well enough... I mean, of course I could criticize Keanu for speaking Chinese worse than someone else, but I don't think it mattered that much. I think the scene was pretty much a cliché of what I'd expect to be in such a film. The scene was among those that I actually liked. I didn't like the film all that much in general.

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (2008)

It isn’t the threat of nuclear warfare but rather our own carelessness with the environment that prompts an alien race to threaten us with extermination in this tree-hugging update of the 1951 sci-fi film. Keanu Reeves is actually quite good as Klaatu, the extraterrestrial ambassador who comes to Earth with the imposing GORT, here a much more organic (and shape-shifting) menace than the clunky robot of the original; Jennifer Connelly works her two expressions (wide-eyed, vaguely erotic confusion and wide-eyed, vaguely erotic confusion) as the Princeton professor who tries to talk the handsome visitor out of pulling the trigger. Director Scott Derrickson’s big-budget remake never quite comes together, but it’s not without its apocalyptic pleasures, including a GORT (here an acronym for Genetically Organized Robotic Technology) who turns into a swarm of nanomachines that devours everything in its path — especially Giants Stadium.
