The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author of A Hologram for the King, a finalist for the National Book Award.

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world?s most powerful internet company, she feels she?s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users? personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company?s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can?t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world?even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman?s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Poor writing style, almost as bad as Dan Brown's.
But the issues the writer raises are veryrelevant for today's social media...

@Particle, was this recently you read about Shibumi? I have that book sitting on my shelf from about 4 years ago when it was first rumored he was interested in it. It was also around that time that I realized I could never hope to keep up with his reading list... :) So it keeps sitting there.

Tweet is from Nov.23,2013

I've read the synopsis of the book and started reading it, but only at page 23 so far.... it's a spy story published in 1979. While some of the things described there are still relevant today and some of the theories have been proved.... others are way outdated. So I really don't see how it could be translated onto film today, without going the Bourne Identity way which means basically rewriting everything.
Apparently there's a 2011 novel inspired by this, but didn't get to that yet.

Later edit
... but I'd really like to see a certain someone play Nicholai ;)

Later later edit:
the more I read, the more I like the book :) But still don't know if it could be adapted to the screen without losing a lot of its flavor...

As Luca says The Circle was poorly written, what made it worth reading was the linear trend we see online today, including many sites wanting real names for user names. Ala TruYou.

I'm one of those people who can see slightly ahead w/tech, media, culture and politics. Long ago, said "your online persona, is going to matter a great deal in society in general" and it has infected nearly every aspect of life with social media.

Cloud Atlas. I love that book, it is one of my top 10 novels. Before the movie said "the author is either pure genius, insane or both" he packs quite a punch with the style, prose and spanning over 400 years of human history in such a way he almost seems like an oracle. Cloud Atlas has a high re-readability too.

As for KR's taste being dark. That's fantastic. My own tastes are rather dark too. From books, movies to TV. Fantasy, sci-fi you name it the darker the better for me. Will check out the rest of the reading list.
