Sometimes I wonder about the alternate universe some of the critics live in. It is a hell realm for sure. I enjoy the realm that understands and is enlightened by Keanu's movies. It is a better place.

Forum Posts: 345 Comments: 10 Reviews: 0 | Joke re music for 47....there were several measures in the movie that reminded me of another piece of music and it has been driving me batty trying to remember where it is from. One day I'll run across it and go "there it is!"

Forum Posts: 2836 Comments: 74 Reviews: 11 | And this movie continues to grow on me. I am revisiting the vids from the Japan release time in the fall. It's more fun watching the 'behind the scenes' now than it was before I saw the movie!

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | @LucaM above -All true, but I do not think it requires any more backstory than is given. It stands as excellent storytelling, period. I think it's incredibly courageous and wonderful to see a big Hollywood picture that has about 30% exposition - needed and appropriate - in the middle! The film could have easily been another hour in length and I think it would have perhaps hung together a little more, but I am certain that all that footage was shot and the studio wouldn't go along.
I want to see a Director's cut, and I also would love to see the whole film in Japanese.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Axie, there are several music cues in the film that are bugging me too, reminiscent of something else.

Forum Posts: 345 Comments: 10 Reviews: 0 | MmeRenard - when I figure it out, will let you know.
edit to add: indeed the directors cut is probably the best of all. The reshoot they did involved more love story and Reeves and a mythical creature battle. Which was at the insistence of the studio execs not Rinsch. (if I recall correctly)

Forum Posts: 345 Comments: 10 Reviews: 0 | LucaMFinding losses is one thing, throwing their own movie under the bus is another. Anyone knows it wasn't gonna bring in 175 mil. in the first week. But that doesn't mean throwing it out in the rain, either. Just an example: when Gravity was launched, Warner offered a luncheon to all the media and press d*cks who then praised the movie to outer space and back. That's PR, people. Universal didn't lift a finger to promote 47 Ronin for the above mentioned keyboard pushers.
That is very good point and it makes one wonder what the hell is going on behind the scenes? The PR has been nearly, non-existent. It had the Japanese Premiere but absent was a US one. (despite filming schedules..) I wonder if the reshoot, editing, rushing a release date (ie Dec 25 2012) long before it was truly ready, throwing Rinsch under the bus repeatedly all speak to the PR problem that has dogged this film (and I'm not one to simply praise a KR movie, I like to maintain objectivity in all things.) Did Universal have a recent change in upper management since this project started filming? What other upheavals are going on at Universal? Was Universal clueless about Japan's foreign film market? (Yes, it is possible. Seen people with far more power be totally clueless about their job and with a hell of a lot more at stake) Sanada is a fantastic actor as well. He may be an almost unknown outside of Asia but again, he should have benefited from this.....

Apparently yes, and more. The Variety article hints to that, and a lot of 'creative differences' It was one of the first projects the studio greenlit under chair Adam Fogelson, who was pushed out of his perch in September.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | I do wonder a bit. For quite a while, media all were saying "Rinsch is being removed / Rinsch has been removed" which is obviously not true. I wonder how it became not true, and who at Universal got pissed off because Rinsch wasn't removed? Let's be clear, I think he's a great director and made a truly magnificent film. It is remarkably stupid and short-sighted of Universal to not support it, and it is an error well on the order of "well, let's just go ahead and make Speed 2 anyway." Any filmmaker who is considering an artistic, epic movie is going to steer clear of Universal for a very long time, since it is abundantly clear that they'd rather keep making Independence Day. Ugh.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Aha, Luca, management changes explains much, maybe all. Hollywood. It's a miracle that decent films ever get made.

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | Or maybe someone's still pissed off that a certain actor didn't make Speed 2. Just sayin'.... ;)
Or maybe another someone is pissed off that Rinsch is marrying a Brazilian model next month, instead of Ridley Scott's daughter. Cherchez la femme, history taught us.... Oh well.

Forum Posts: 2836 Comments: 74 Reviews: 11 | @LucaM, that woman with Rinsch at the Japan premiere is not Ridley Scott's daughter? I did not know.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Yes, that would be Hollywood "logic" - be pissed at Keanu for not doing Speed 2 instead of realizing that nothing could have saved that sinking ship. One might take from that that Keanu is smart, and maybe has good instincts.
Are we trying to apply logic to Hollywood? Not sure that's a good idea.

Forum Posts: 345 Comments: 10 Reviews: 0 | See, I knew nothing of the relationship status of Rinsch except the photo I saw of that gorgeous woman. Hadn't followed everything regarding the politics of Universal but I know politics and while there maybe subtle differences within any organisation....there are some common themes and *that* there had been a major shakeup behind the corporate scenes speaks volumes.
