The Sufis have a beautiful phrase:
tahaiyyure ishq.
Meaning love’s bewilderment.
The phrase contains the two great maps
for a spiritual journey.

Love:
Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah, Lalla Ded,
the great Christian mystics - Julian of Norwich,
St Theresa of Avila, St Francis of Assisi,
the Hindu Bhakti saints - Sri Madhava, Sri Jayatirtha, Sri Ramanuja,
Sri Ramakrishna - were all intoxicated by this love
of the Divine. Joseph Campbell calls these the five degrees of Love:
1 the love of the servant to the master
2 the love between friends
3 the love of a parent for a child
4 the love of a spouse
And the fifth, the highest order of love - compulsive, uncontrollable,
illicit passionate love that rips you out of yourself .
The love that Mira felt for Krishna
or Rumi felt for Shams, his great soul-mate.
This burning river consumes the lover
leaving only the ashes of identity
and Pure Surrender in its all devouring wake.

Bewilderment : The other word in the phrase.
This is not some dry intellectual befuddlement.
This is an equally powerful emotion
that sears everything it touches.
It is the awe and wonder of a moonless night
when the white sash of the Milky Way
lights the ground at your feet; when stars speckle the dome of the night sky
from horizon to horizon and you are the tiny invisible centre
of all the galaxies whirling around you, you this pivot that itself
is vanishing just as the invisible moon vanishes into shadow.

Who am I ? Who are we ? What is aware? What seeks? What seeks what?

This is the glorious bewilderment of our Being.
All ideas and concepts that first trigger this emotional blaze
fall away like withering fruit and the Light of Presence alone shines.
The great Zen and Tao Masters - Bodhidharma, Dogen, Lao-tsu, Chuang - tsu, Huang Po ; the Indian masters - Gaudapada, Shankara, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; and contemporary teachers like Eckhart Tolle and Mooji - saw through the illusions of the senses and the mind and saw the shining Self in everything. And to that they surrendered.

Surrender is the peak where all roads end.
The mad blaze of love finds sweet repose
and the burning questions of bewilderment
relax and allow the Heart to dance with the Mystery.
Each journey has its own unique flavour
for when you break through into this country
you are the first one there. Paradoxes are the currency
in this land because although every master has been here
you are still the first. Because here there is no there. No then.
No higher or lower. No before or after. No frames of reference.

There is nothing but love. And the Self shines from everything.
And the surrender is complete.
