Love’s Bewilderment

The Sufis have a beautiful phrase:
tahaiyyure ishq.
Meaning love’s bewilderment.
The phrase contains the two great maps
for a spiritual journey.

Love:
Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah, Lalla Ded,
the great Christian mystics - Julian of Norwich,
St Theresa of Avila, St Francis of Assisi,
the Hindu Bhakti saints - Sri Madhava, Sri Jayatirtha, Sri Ramanuja,
Sri Ramakrishna - were all intoxicated by this love
of the Divine. Joseph Campbell calls these the five degrees of Love:
1 the love of the servant to the master
2 the love between friends
3 the love of a parent for a child
4 the love of a spouse
And the fifth, the highest order of love - compulsive, uncontrollable,
illicit passionate love that rips you out of yourself .
The love that Mira felt for Krishna
or Rumi felt for Shams, his great soul-mate.
This burning river consumes the lover
leaving only the ashes of identity
and Pure Surrender in its all devouring wake.

Bewilderment : The other word in the phrase.
This is not some dry intellectual befuddlement.
This is an equally powerful emotion
that sears everything it touches.
It is the awe and wonder of a moonless night
when the white sash of the Milky Way
lights the ground at your feet; when stars speckle the dome of the night sky
from horizon to horizon and you are the tiny invisible centre
of all the galaxies whirling around you, you this pivot that itself
is vanishing just as the invisible moon vanishes into shadow.

Who am I ? Who are we ? What is aware? What seeks? What seeks what?

This is the glorious bewilderment of our Being.
All ideas and concepts that first trigger this emotional blaze
fall away like withering fruit and the Light of Presence alone shines.
The great Zen and Tao Masters - Bodhidharma, Dogen, Lao-tsu, Chuang - tsu, Huang Po ; the Indian masters - Gaudapada, Shankara, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj; and contemporary teachers like Eckhart Tolle and Mooji - saw through the illusions of the senses and the mind and saw the shining Self in everything. And to that they surrendered.

Surrender is the peak where all roads end.
The mad blaze of love finds sweet repose
and the burning questions of bewilderment
relax and allow the Heart to dance with the Mystery.
Each journey has its own unique flavour
for when you break through into this country
you are the first one there. Paradoxes are the currency
in this land because although every master has been here
you are still the first. Because here there is no there. No then.
No higher or lower. No before or after. No frames of reference.

There is nothing but love. And the Self shines from everything.
And the surrender is complete.

Great quotes and references, Arya!

From Spirituality and Practice web page:
the mystery:

To love God is to follow the mystery, to be led by its showing and withdrawing.
— John S. Dunne in The Music of Time

Mysteries are not to be solved. The eye goes blind when it only wants to see why.
— Jalaluddin Rumi in The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks

It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.
— Albert Einstein quoted in Holy Clues by Stephen Kendrick

At the heart of every story is Mystery. The reasons we attribute to events may be far different from their true cause. Often our first interpretation of events is quite different from our last reading of them. Mystery is a process, and so is our understanding of it.
— Rachel Naomi Remen in Kitchen Table Wisdom

Our life is a faint tracing on the surface of mystery.
— Annie Dillard in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

In other words, mystery, from the Greek word mysterion, is not about what we can solve but about what astonishes us in splendor and horror: that part of creation that can be experienced but never completely explained. This spiritual understanding of mystery is quite different from our common, everyday understanding of the term. Mysterion is about experiencing mystery as awe, not just as something secret and hidden.
— Stephen Kendrick in Holy Clues

Paradox is in fact a hallmark of western spirituality, an ongoing reminder that mystery is the heart, the atmosphere and completion of our spiritual quest, that the ultimately untouchable is forever at our fingertips.
— John Kirvan in God Hunger

All that a Guru can tell you is: ‘My dear Sir, you are quite mistaken about yourself. You are not the person you think yourself to be.’

Trust nobody, not even yourself. Search, find out, remove and reject every assumption till you reach the living waters and the rock of truth.

Until you are free of the drug, all your religions and sciences, prayers and Yogas are of no use to you, for based on a mistake (individuality), they strengthen it.

But if you stay with the idea that you are not the body nor the mind, not even their witness, but altogether beyond, your mind will grow in clarity, your desires in purity, your actions in charity, and that inner distillation will take you to another world, a world of truth and fearless love.

— Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Thanks, Arya! I was thinking about X, the mystery, the kiss, "x marks the spot" and so on. I don't know if you're familiar with http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com some great resources and tons of films. More than half of my Netflix list is from this site. Good books too!

“Peace requires us to surrender our illusions of control. We can love and care for others but we cannot possess our children, lovers, family, or friends. We can assist them, pray for them, and wish them well, yet in the end their happiness and suffering depend on their thoughts and actions, not on our wishes.”

Light and Darkness, life and death, right and left, are brothers of one another. They are inseparable. Because of this neither are the good good, nor evil evil, nor is life life, nor death death. For this reason each one will dissolve into its earliest origin. But those who are exalted above the world are indissoluble, eternal.
(The Gospel of Philip)

Detachment of duality is what I get from it. The truth is unchangeable and has no name...you can give it a name ... it is lost only that identity. If it has an identity then it has an beginning and end, it is not the truth. We are the truth hidden behind the name and live in duality. At least that's my take on it. Why question if someone gets this or not ? I don't see the issue???

Yeah, well ya know everyone is at their own level of comprehension/understanding. Some things we connect with and others we don't.

Yes indeed LucaM.
I would love to talk about this, maybe with a glass of dark red wine...

Why question if someone gets this or not ? I don't see the issue???

@ Bliss, it wasn`t my intention at all to ask if someone get`s it or to check someone`s "level of understanding".

It was a kind of rhetorical question, I was really impressed by the scope of that text...
