Set to appear at the Screen Forever conference from 15 to 17 November, 22 years have passed since Yost helped Speed gross $350m worldwide. The fast-paced thrills of Yost’s script is anchored by an irresistible plot device where a bomb is strapped to the undercarriage of a bus, primed to explode if the bus drops below 50 miles per hour.

Asked where he got the inspiration from, Yost reveals he improved upon a twist first told to him by his father. “My father had a show on television in Canada all about movies. He had heard about a (Akira) Kurosawa (Japanese filmmaker) script with a train that couldn’t slow down,” Yost says.

“That ended up being filmed as Runaway Train. I saw that and came out thinking ‘Boy, they just couldn’t get to the brakes, but wouldn’t it be better if they couldn’t slow down because it was a bomb and a bus’. I just moulded on that idea for several years and things started to click into place.”

Speed shot Reeves to a new level of superstardom, but producers only settled on their leading man after exhausting a long list of other choices including Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Wesley Snipes, and Woody Harrelson.

“You go down the list and then someone at the studio said what about that guy Keanu Reeves, who had done action in Point Break. We then met him and he already had a cool haircut. He rode up on a cool motorcycle. He’s a big, tall strapping guy. We knew we could send him to the gym, and bulk him up a little bit. He’s a good actor and he just seemed to be perfect for it. It was a quick decision once we met him.”

Aspiring only to thrill, "Speed" inadvertently captures the moment of transition between a suburban city and an urban one. Pure cinema? Perhaps. Pure action cinema? Probably. Pure Los Angeles cinema? Definitely.
