http://www.vulture.com/2018/01/the-keanu-reeves-super-bowl-ad-opts-for-action.html

When we first heard rumblings about the Keanu Reeves Squarespace ad we honestly didn't know what to expect. It seemed like an odd pairing, for starters. Would these ads lean into the beauty that is Keanu Reeves? Would they highlight his strengths as a star - his physicality, grace, and overall coolness? Would they be eye-catchingly weird? The answer to all three is a resounding yes.
The teasers released last week were noticeably bonkers, featuring Reeves talking to various versions of himself for advice and chilling at a meditative campfire retreat. The in-game spot for this year’s Super Bowl is a thing of beauty for a very different reason. It leans into where Reeves excels: action. That balancing on that motorcycle while cruising down the highway stunt? Reeves did it himself.
If you're wondering why Reeves paired with Squarespace, this quote given to Vulture can help clear things up, "For me, it all began with the love of riding motorcycles. Turning that into a business really came from wanting to be a part of creating something that I wanted to take into the world. Once your passion becomes something you share with a larger audience, there's a kind of professionalism you have to project. That professionalism factors into how you design your website." The blend of action, weirdness, and that particular brand of Reeves coolness makes the ad addictively watchable. We can't turn it off.

Interview With Keanu Reeves

Learn how Squarespace teamed up with Keanu Reeves and his company, Arch Motorcycle, to make this motorcycle adventure happen.
Shot By Markus Eriksson

SQUARESPACE: At Squarespace, one of the things the company was founded on is the belief in great design, usability, and performance. There's a lot of parallels with that and Arch Motorcycle. Did that play into your decision to use Squarespace for your website?

KEANU: Yeah, Arch Motorcycle is really based around form, function, and design. When we were looking at places to create the website, Squarespace was really the fit. Like riding a motorcycle, there's something about Squarespace that's really accessible, but then also can become sophisticated. And it's really up to you. So, it was really a great way for us to bring Arch Motorcycle into the world.

SQUARESPACE: How involved are you with the Arch website?

KEANU: Very involved. "What's our message? How are we going into the world?" With my co-founder, Gard Hollinger, and with the team from Arch, that vision of the company kind of funnels in. Really, Gard and I are kind of the tip of the spear of that, speaking about what is the vision of the company and how does the vision be expressed in the world.

SQUARESPACE: Why is having a website or an online presence really important for your business?

KEANU: So, when you have a business, you need a website. It's important, because it's the connection that you have to the outside world. The way that anyone in the world can have access and have that moment of exchange and communication with what you're doing - is unparalleled with the website and with the internet.

SQUARESPACE: You haven't done a commercial in years. What made you decide to do this particular campaign with Squarespace?

KEANU: I started acting when I was fifteen. And I had this moment with my agents, where I said to them, "I can't go on a commercial audition for something that I don't have an affection [for] or believe in." So, when myself and Arch were approached by Squarespace, it was cool, because we use Squarespace. And then, when the creative was brought forward, in terms of what the ideas were, it was really exciting. They were smart. They were funny, I thought. "That could be cool. Surf a motorcycle in the desert. Yeah."

SQUARESPACE: How did you realize that your passion could become something much more than a simple hobby?

KEANU: Arch Motorcycle began about eight years ago. I had a motorcycle that I was looking to customize and I was introduced to Gard Hollinger, who's a renowned bike designer and builder. Over the course of four years, collaborating together, and then, with his design, the motorcycle was built. I rode that motorcycle and I'd never ridden anything in my life like that. A big, American V-Twin that handled like a performance cruiser. And I said to Gard, "Let's bring this into the world. Do you want to start a motorcycle company?" And he, being in the motorcycle world of business for 30 years – 35 years – said "Why? Why should we do it?" And I think in the background of that is we had really enjoyed the collaborative process. And we really had a belief and passion for what he had built. And a drive to wanting to bring that into the world. And so we founded Arch Motorcycle.

...and there are people saying on Twitter "so irresponsible of Keanu to do that! Now kids and adults will be trying that! And they'll set themselves on fire with campfires! And and and...they'll throw their computers into campfires! They could explode and hurt U! OMG!!!"

But trump? Yeah, we're ok with trump having the red button for nuclear war.

Ppl. Where's Klaatu when we need him?

Keanu Reeves Wasn't Fazed by the Life-Threatening Stunts in His Squarespace Super Bowl Ad
Yes, that's really him on top of a motorcycle at 45 MPH
By Katie Richards

It might not come as a surprise that Keanu Reeves was 100 percent on board with the idea of standing on top of a motorcycle that would barrel down an open stretch of endless road at 45 miles per hour in the middle of the desert in Lancaster, California. When Squarespace presented the idea (which would go on to be the premise for the brand's fifth consecutive Super Bowl ad) to Reeves, his first question wasn’t about stunt doubles, or how they'd superimpose his face. Rather, he wanted to know how they'd pull it off. Because yes, Reeves is actually standing on top of a moving vehicle in that ad, contrary to what you might think.
Sure, he’s harnessed in, but that bike is indeed moving at around 45 miles per hour, and he is indeed standing on that moving bike. Squarespace needed its production company partner, Reset, to build a custom rig for the shoot so the motorcycle could actually move on the ground.
It's worth noting that the man who made this particular stunt famous, Indian Larry, died performing it. Larry passed away in 2004 after attempting the risky move. Reeves knew all about Indian Larry and the famous attempt when Squarespace's in-house creative team, which is behind this year's spot, presented the idea.
"Most people would probably have a stunt double do this, or superimpose his face onto a stunt double to try and make it look real," David Lee, chief creative officer at Squarespace, said. "I think it was all our opinion that in order for this to look genuine, he would need to do the stunt himself."
Reeves’ willingness to commit to the stunt and contribute his own ideas to the creative process made the ad's development and shooting more seamless. "I respected the fact that Keanu wasn’t just going to do anything that we wanted him to do, and he was opinionated about that," Lee said. "I think ultimately, that has made the work feel more natural and [has made] it more iconic."
Lee added that "most people don’t know" about Reeves' sense of humor because he's "so reserved and he's not out there in the public." "He is probably the most humble person with a pretty sharp sense of humor," Lee said.
In an previously released Squarespace film that clocks in at nearly three minutes, Reeves sits in front of a burning fire in the middle of the desert. At one point, he's sitting in said desert at night, hands behind him, chest thrust up towards the sky. He raises his head up to the moon and starts howling—almost barking—like a wolf. That lovely moment (around the 2:05 mark) was Reeves' idea.
"That wasn't scripted at all," Lee said of the howling. "That was [the result of] him in a preproduction meeting saying, 'What if I did this?' We kind of looked at him and said…'So you're good with this?' And he just belted it out right there in the preproduction meeting."
There was only one thing that made Reeves hesitant: In order to capture all the shots on film, the team needed to have a helicopter flying overhead for each of the 12-or-so takes. To get the best shot possible, that helicopter had to get pretty up close and personal with Reeves while he was surfing on top of the bike.
"We had this pilot who could be three to four meters away from [Reeves], but he wanted it to be just a bit further," Sandra Nam, director of creative production, and head of Squarespace’s content studio, said.
In the end, the helicopter got the perfect shots, and Reeves is happily alive and well to see the final ad air during Super Bowl LII.

• alwaysbenwrightKeanu is cool, but J. Glazer is even cooler.
• dan.florez@luismarkgonzalez I'm done. Game over, forever. (Seriously, so sick! Did y'all keep it under 50mph?)
• luismarkgonzalez@dan.florez haha he was definitely going around 60mph. There’s a bts video online showing the rig and everything. And he ACTUALLY did his own stunt which was nuts.
• luismarkgonzalez@alwaysbenwright he was brilliant. The WHOLE spot was shot with 35mm film camera. And the directors cut is actually 4:3.
