Keanu Reeves, Daniel Dae Kim Join Ali Wong’s ‘Always Be My Maybe’

Keanu Reeves and Daniel Dae Kim are joining the cast of Netflix’s romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” which stars Ali Wong and Randall Park.

The project started filming this week in Vancouver, Canada. Wong and Park star in the feature as childhood sweethearts who have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. They reconnect as adults when Wong’s character — a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco — runs into Park’s character, a happily struggling musician still living at home working for his dad. The old sparks are still there, but can they adapt to each other’s world?

Netflix made the casting announcement Wednesday. Additional cast members include Karan Soni, Charlyne Yi, Michelle Buteau, Vivian Bang, James Saito, Lyrics Born, and Susan Park.

Nahnatchka Khan, who worked with Wong and Park on “Fresh Off the Boat,” is directing the feature from a script by Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco. Producers are Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Erin Westerman, Wong, and Park. Brendan Ferguson is exec producing.

Reeves is also filming “John Wick: Chapter 3.” Kim stars in CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0.”

Netflix will release the film in 2019. Wong’s first Netflix stand-up special, “Baby Cobra,” launched on the service in 2016 and her most recent special, “Hard Knock Wife,” debuted on Mother’s Day.

Ladies and gentlemen —your new fave comedy duo is here. Netflix released a teaser for the upcoming rom-com Always Be My Maybe starring Ali Wong and Randall Park which also announced the release date of May 31 — which is a great way to end Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Set to Mariah Carey’s song on which the movie’s title is based, we get some serious late ’90s and early ’00s fashion, haircuts and dance moves, the rom-com explores the premise of “the friend zone” and the comedic duo of Wong and Park makes it wildly worthwhile. Netflix, Wong, and Park all posted the teaser on their Instagram accounts to give us a peek at what to expect from the comedy.

In Always Be My Maybe, childhood friends Sasha (Wong) and Marcus (Park) have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. But when Sasha, now a celebrity chef in Los Angeles, returns to her hometown of San Francisco to open a new restaurant, she runs into her old pal — a happily complacent musician still living at home and working for his dad. Though the two are reluctant to reconnect, they soon find the old sparks — and maybe some new ones — are there.

The movie is directed by Nahnatchka Khan and written by Wong, Park and Michael Golamco. The cast also features Keanu Reeves, Daniel Dae Kim, Michelle Buteau, Vivian Bang, Karan Soni, Charlyne Yi, James Saito, Lyrics Born, and Susan Park.

Keanu Reeves loves Wong so much that, after she reached out to his people with a long-shot ask—would the very busy movie star appear in the aforementioned rom-com (and not, by the way, as the male lead)?—he not only agreed but requested an audience with her, in which he quoted some of her stand-up and launched into an impromptu martial-arts interpretation of her specials. Exceedingly modest, she only admits this after I press her for details of the meeting: “I watched both specials…. You took no prisoners,” Wong recalls Reeves saying. “You were like”—she gestures karate-chopping the air, then mimes biting a grenade and throwing it.

“When the invitation came to act with Ali in her film, I was honored,” Reeves tells me in an e-mail. “To have had the opportunity to work with such a brave, talented artist and great person was a joy and inspiring.” Reeves’s commitment to the role, and Wong, is wonderfully apparent in his laugh-out-loud scenes—he gives great, comedic gusto.
