It was a quiet night at Walter’s lab, and Gene the cow was out of her stall and chewing solemnly on the equipment.

“Moo,” Gene said in satisfied approval, sticking her nose into a container of strawberry-flavoured Twizzlers that tasted a little better than the mass of wires she had previously attempted to tackle. “Moo.”

September materialised out of nowhere and stood there, blinking, appraising the cow.

Gene looked up. She would have raised an eyebrow, but she didn’t have one.

“You’re a cow,” September observed, the way that Observers are wont to.

“Moo,” said Gene, and ate his hat.
