some news- it's been a long time. but as always "EW" manages to get in their digs:
"With their respective track records for torture-porn provocation and monosyllabic action-movie acting, writer-director Eli Roth and Keanu Reeves aren’t exactly synonymous with indie excellence."

um, seriously? Keanu not renowned for indie films? the perennial champion of first-time directors, the person who was instrumental in allowinf Generation Um... to exist?

and yes, "torture-porn" still makes my stomach churn, and not in a good way

With "Cabin Fever" and "Hostel," Eli Roth made a name for himself as one of the most stylishly confrontational American directors on the emerging horror scenes-so much that he eventually epitomized the so-called "torture porn" movement. Then he stumbled a bit with a poorly-received "Hostel" sequel and a number of projects that never fully came together. While Roth maintained a strong presence as a producer and landed a major role in front of the camera in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," his directorial career floundered. In 2013, the cannibal shocker "The Green Inferno" didn't exactly do much for him - the midnight movie delivered some gory treats, but was largely seen as an empty-headed homage to better, scarier efforts. His latest feature, however, the Midnight premiere "Knock, Knock," however, looks intriguing: It stars Keanu Reeves, who's been enjoying something of a career resurgence in the wake of the hit "John Wick," as an unfaithful parent and husband who winds up in the throes of a revenge plot. Reeves has described the project as a home invasion story, and his choices of late suggest that the material may in fact suit his muted delivery. In other words, this sounds like a different pace for Roth, who has always shown a strong command of the medium even in his weakest efforts-and it could be just the time for a bounceback.

I didn't watch Hostel, but did watch Cabin Fever and it's not 'torture porn'; its a clever tongue-in-cheek homage/parody of the whole horror genre. And its ending is worthy of Stephen King.
Also Aftershock, written by Roth, shows he's a good storyteller. Direction (by Nicolás López, also co-writer) didn't help it, though... it lacked something.

Plot:
"On Father's Day weekend architect and husband, father of two kids Evan Webber has to stay home (due to an injury) to work while his wife and children go to the beach on a trip they had preplanned for him.
That's when he is distracted by a knock on his door. Outside in a stormy night, two gorgeous bombshells (Genesis & Bel) with very little clothing stand on his door shivering.
Those two beautiful young girls are ready to turn a man's wild fantasy into his worst nightmare."
