In one of the most significant deals scored at the American Film Market, Amazon Studios has acquired Nicolas Winding Refn's anticipated "The Neon Demon" and will release it theatrically Stateside next summer.

How did working with Nicolas Winding Refn on the soundtrack for The Neon Demon compare to working with him on Drive?
Nicolas also sends me his script and he talks to me about the project before he even shoots it. Well, that was the case with Only God Forgives. Drive, I didn't have any warning, we had five weeks to do it, so that was pretty fast. I knew from the spirit of Only God Forgives that in his case, the script isn't adhered to very closely. I think I know what kind of music Nicolas likes, so I kind of stay in that territory.
After doing a couple of films with him you realize monogamy has its benefits. You understand what he's looking for, the communication becomes better, and usually you go a little deeper each time. I think Neon Demon had some similarities to Drive, it's kind of a sparse electronic score. Music writing has a juicy role in Neon Demon—well, I haven't seen the finished film, but there's over an hour of music. And there's a lot of places where the music is really pushed out more into the spotlight, even more than Drive. I think I got a bigger part in the film, it's flattering.
And with the film—obviously I haven't seen a trailer for it yet—but it's basically a horror film right?
We describe the first half as a melodrama like Valley Of The Dolls, and the second half is like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It doesn't seem to be a traditional horror film to me, but horror is the genre that it's closest to.

Were you trying to match the visual horror with the music itself? Or were you trying to stay at a distance?
Yeah, there's some horror stuff. He gave me a lot of the psychological parts of the film to do the music. The first half of the film was kind of romantic so there's a lot of romantic music. But then there's some cold-blooded horror stuff too and I think could be really creepy.

But Hollywood star Keanu Reeves dropped a heavy hint to AFP Tuesday that the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's supermodel horror story "The Neon Demon" had made the line-up.

The actor, who is the male lead, confirmed he "would be in Cannes" when he arrived in Paris to promote his own documentary "Side by Side".

She reaps much more screen time in Refn's The Neon Demon, coming to cinemas in the UK on July 8, but she's no less dedicated to the role. In fact, she credits Refn with bringing out the method-school side of acting that Malone is constantly seeking, but rarely accessing. "It was a mind, body and soul possession," she says. "I've only had that happen accidentally on set, where I don't remember who I was or what I became. This was a Nic Refn possession."

In The Neon Demon, Malone inhabits Ruby, a make-up artist who acts as a mother hen (as real-life make-up artists are wont to do) to Elle Fanning's model newcomer Jesse. The film is a parable of sorts, about youth and beauty and how those two things are becoming one. The people who gravitate towards Jesse are obsessed with her youth, which sends them into a cannibalistic frenzy. For Malone, it's something that hits close to home, having been a child actress and seen the world through that skewed lens. "(Being an actress), I've had to model," she says. "But the experiences in the film are a heightened version of what I think all women, whether they're in Hollywood or not, feel. I could feel elements of this film's themes when I was ten years old looking at magazines. And I'm sure young boys probably felt very similar things when they're looking through magazines: 'Oh, this is beauty? This is what I should want? This is desire?'"

Inspired by Refn's own time as a commercial director in the fashion industry, The Neon Demon reflects upon the male gaze. "He (might have been) working with an actor who is one of the most beautiful women in the world, and the client says, 'She's too fat. She's not pretty enough,'" says Malone. "And also, he has two daughters, so a lot of it comes from him being like, 'This is fucked up.' Because he already sees it in his daughters at seven years old, being like, 'Am I pretty? Am I fat?' That's where the idea for this story came from."

When I ask her how she maintained her own balance through her early success in an industry where the beauty of young women is a commodity to be exploited by older people, Malone points out that most child actors actually get by without any problems, but that the public only wants to hear about the ones that don't. "I got through it fine," she says. "I'm not a crazy person. I might have a different understanding of it if I was in rehab. I really just kept working, and not caring about much else."

The film showcases an aspiring starlet will do anything and everything to be in the limelight.

Elle Fanning becomes a Los Angeles "it girl" like no other in the upcoming horror film "The Neon Demon." Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Amazon Studios released the first trailer for the highly-anticipated feature that will premiere in the official competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
"I see 20 - 30 girls come in here everyday, from small towns, with big dreams -- some girls crack under the pressure. You, you're going to be great," Christina Hendricks prophetically tells Fanning in the first clip.
In "The Neon Demon," Fanning stars as Jesse, a sweet aspiring model who moves to L.A. to get her big break. Things take a dark turn when her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women, who after she gets exposure, will take any means necessary to keep her where she is. Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves, Desmond Harrington and Abbey Lee are among the additional cast members.
The feature has garnered much attention from critics, and coming from a visionary like Refn, is expected to be dark and spectacular.
The term "Neon Demon" has been dissected by the production's team members with some, like Hendricks, saying that it will show "the dark underbelly of beauty and the things we would do for beauty," or Bella Heathcote's interpretation, "The industry and the city. It's glossy and shiny but it will eat you alive."
