The movie starts with him doing a voice over and unless you were hyper familiar with his voice... you might not know it was his. Then Lynch says his name and that is when its clear who the interviewer is. Yes Side by Side is a wonderful doc. The bit I would like to see over and over was him complaining about the long takes with digital shoots I think from ASD. He hammed it up the tiniest bit saying "Lets stop now...can't we just stop already?" I paraphrase but it was funny and the audience laughed. I think that every one of the interviewees were enjoying their time with him. Truthfully I'd rather see this one on my own tv screen. With all the parts cut for time, or whatever,in the extras features.

Can there be a more relevant story for today’s film crowd than Side by Side, required viewing for anyone anywhere who works in and cares about film? The doc covers the transition from photochemical film to digital and features about 70 interviews (pulled from about double that amount). Not quite an obit for celluloid but close, the movie covers the history of film and digital’s historic big moments (the Dogme movement, George Lucas’ nervous Phantom Menace debut, the milestone of the digitally captured Slumdog Millionaire’s cinematography Oscar, etc.) and focuses on the historic revolution now in its final stages. Many big names appear in the doc—among them, directors James Cameron, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and David Lynch, and veterans in the areas of cinematography, special effects, color correction and editing. Yes, there are still a few well-known celluloid holdouts/sentimental souls (cinematographer Wally Pfister, et al.) and much anxiety regarding effective archiving of digital content. But the evidence onscreen (including amazing cameras like The Red and Arri’s Alexa, the boundless imagery and color corrections computers and their software can achieve, etc.) makes the case for digital. With its journey across so many years of film history and film disciplines, Side by Side isn’t just required viewing—it’s required second viewing.

Side by Side I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity of viewing this at Tribeca Film Festival 2012. The theater was packed on a Friday afternoon. There was so much movie making royalty in this documentary I wont even drop any names excepting for Keanu Reeves' who is the interviewer and who's most often the voice over for lots of technical information on the transitioning from film to digital. Somehow he made the technical journey understandable and enjoyable and without judgment about which is better. I am betting this documentary will be a staple in film schools. The clips of the movies alone make it hard to take your eyes off the screen lest you miss something. I look forward to having it on DVD. And just for the record, I want a lot of extras like deleted scenes and out takes. :)

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | ARYA - that festival is happening 94 miles away from my hometown. And of course they forgot to upload the program/days/screening locations/etc. Bloody typical of Romanians. *hisses* Nevertheless, I am so attending that screening ! *starts emailing friends to book her tickets no matter what* Billion thanks for the link :) and yes, he could, especially considering... nevermind ;)
