It has been over twenty years since the first Back to the Future film was released on the 3rd of July, 1985. It spawned two sequels that completed the movie trilogy, followed by an animated series and several comic books.

Meanwhile, the Back to the Future fandom has grown through the years into a small but close-knit community, with new fans coming in all the time. Many fans' yearnings for a continuation of the time travelling adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown has led them to discover fan fiction and the joys that come from reading and writing it. Initially, fan fiction was limited to the works of writers who had the talent and contacts to be featured in fanzines, but with the growth of the Internet, the writing of fan fiction entered the online public domain and made it possible for anyone with an Internet connection to get their writings read.

The Back to the Future section on FanFiction.Net now boasts nearly five hundred stories and poems - a far cry from the millions in large fandoms like Harry Potter, but still a vast improvement from the thirty or so fics it had back in 2002. Apart from FanFiction.Net and other fan fiction websites, there are around two dozen personal sites that host Back to the Future fan fiction, some - like the works of Mary Jean Holmes and Kristen Sheley - more well known than others.

This directory, started in June 2007 by Anakin McFly, is the first attempt at a cumulative listing of all the BTTF fan fiction currently available on the Internet. Whether you are a new fan who wants to get acquainted with the fan fiction in this fandom, or an old fan looking for fan fiction you have yet to read, this directory will hopefully prove useful to you in some way.
