as a side note: in the comics world, a character 'belongs' to the publishing house, not to the writer/artist. So a character is written by several writers, in time, and each of them brings his own personality to the table, so to speak.
The exception are the so-called 'author series' such as "Sandman" for example, where the writer and editor agree to go full circle and close the series after a limited number of issues (75, in Sandman's case). Later, the publishing house may decide to expand the universe and commission related stories to other writers, but not with the same main character. But those are lucky and rare cases in the comics world...
